Product Description
Gatura comes from smallholder farmers in the Gatura area of Nyeri County, where ripe cherry is delivered to Gatura Factory for sorting, fermentation, washing, and drying. The factory takes its name from the village of Gatura, and the lot sits within Kenya’s washed factory system, which gives small farms the structure needed for careful, consistent processing.
Nyeri lies in Kenya’s central highlands, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range. Cool temperatures, high elevation, and deep red volcanic soils support slow cherry maturation and the clean, vivid structure that defines many classic Kenyan coffees. This lot is built around SL28 and SL34, with SL28 bringing layered acidity and fruit, and SL34 adding sweetness and depth.
After hand picking and sorting, the coffee is fermented for roughly 24 hours, washed through channels, soaked overnight, and dried on raised beds for about 15 days with regular turning and hand sorting. It is also part of a project connected to Kamavindi Coffee Lab and Rumukia Farmers Cooperative Society, focused on separating SL28 and SL34 from newer varieties such as Batian and Ruiru 11. In the cup, Gatura is bright and juicy, with blackberry, nectarine, and citrus.
